Why QR Codes on Printed Materials Work

QR code scans hit 89 million in the US in 2022 and have grown every year since. The reason is simple: phones got better at reading them. Every iPhone and Android now scans QR codes from the default camera app. No special app needed since 2017.

Bridge Print to Digital

A postcard with a QR code linking to a landing page turns a $0.15 mailer into a trackable marketing channel. Add UTM parameters and you see exactly how many people scanned in Google Analytics.

Replace Typing with Scanning

Nobody types a 40-character URL from a flyer. A QR code removes that friction completely. One scan, theyโ€™re on your page. Restaurants figured this out during COVID and never went back.

Update Without Reprinting

With 4OVER4โ€™s dynamic QR codes, the destination URL is hosted on our servers. Change where it points anytime from your dashboard โ€” no new code, no reprinting. Your menu link, event page, or promo offer stays current even if the printed piece was made months ago.

Track Offline Marketing

UTM parameters on QR code URLs give you the same tracking you get from online ads. Source, medium, campaign: all visible in Google Analytics. Know which flyer, which location, which event drove the most scans. Dynamic codes include built-in scan tracking. See how many scans, from where, and on what device โ€” all in your 4OVER4 dashboard.

4OVER4 has printed over 10 billion cards and marketing materials since 1999. With both static and dynamic QR codes, built-in scan tracking, and a digital landing page feature with custom domains (coming soon), 4OVER4 is the only print company that gives you the full QR toolkit. Generate it, customize it, make it dynamic, track it, print it on 350+ products. No other print competitor comes close.

QR Code Best Practices for Print

A QR code that doesn't scan is worse than no QR code at all. These five rules keep your QR codes working on every phone, every time.

Minimum Size: 1โ€ x 1โ€

Anything smaller and older phones struggle to read it. On a business card, 0.8โ€ works if the contrast is strong. On posters and banners, scale up proportionally. A 24โ€x36โ€ poster should have at least a 2โ€ QR code. Bigger is always better for scanning distance.

Contrast: Dark Code on Light Background

Black code on white background gives the highest scan rate. Dark blue or dark green on white also works. Avoid light-colored codes on dark backgrounds. Phone cameras need that contrast difference to detect the pattern. If you can read it easily with your eyes, a phone can read it too.

Quiet Zone: Leave White Space Around the Code

The blank area around your QR code isnโ€™t wasted space. Scanners need it to find the edges. Leave at least 4 modules (the small squares that make up the pattern) of white space on all sides. Donโ€™t crowd text or images against the border.

Test Before You Print 500 Copies

Print one copy at actual size. Scan it with at least two different phones, one iPhone, one Android. Check that the link goes where you expect. This takes 30 seconds and saves you from reprinting an entire order with a broken code.

Error Correction: Use High

Higher error correction means the code still scans even if part of it is damaged, smudged, or partially covered by a finger. For small print sizes (business cards, stickers), high error correction is essential. 4OVER4โ€™s generator defaults to high.

4OVER4's QR Code Generator vs Print Competitors

Other print companies either have no QR tool at all, or a basic one that generates a URL code and nothing else. 4OVER4 gives you the full package: generate, customize, make it dynamic, build a digital landing page, save it, and print it on 350+ products.

4OVER4 is the only print company that offers both static and dynamic QR codes for free. Static codes for permanent destinations like your website or WiFi password. Dynamic codes that let you change the destination anytime from your dashboard without reprinting a single piece. Plus a digital landing page feature with custom domains that turns your QR code into a full branded experience, like a Linktree built specifically for print marketing.

Vistaprint has a basic QR generator limited to URLs. Uprinting and Moo.com have no QR tool at all. None of them offer dynamic codes, digital landing pages, scan tracking, or the ability to save and reuse QR codes across products. If you need QR codes on printed materials, 4OVER4 is the complete solution.

What 4OVER4 offersYesYes

4OVER4 is one of the few platforms that gives you both static and dynamic QR codes, free. Most QR generators charge a monthly fee for dynamic codes. Most print companies don't offer any QR tool at all. 4OVER4 does both, and connects them directly to 350+ printed products.

Use static codes for permanent things: your business card URL, your restaurant menu, your WiFi password, your Google Maps listing. The destination never changes, so the code never needs to change. It works forever with no account, no server dependency, no cost.

Use dynamic codes for things that change: seasonal promotions, event registrations, limited-time offers, A/B testing different landing pages. Print the QR code once, then update where it points anytime from your 4OVER4 dashboard. No reprinting. No new code. The same printed piece keeps working with a new destination.

And with the digital landing page feature (coming soon), your dynamic QR code can point to a beautiful, branded page on your own custom domain. Think of it as a Linktree designed specifically for print marketing: a central hub with your links, contact info, and brand identity that you control completely from your 4OVER4 account.

They told us we were crazy. We don't want to be sane.
1999

The Beginning

In 1999, Google was barely starting out. WiFi didn't exist. People were afraid of Y2K. And two best friends, second-generation immigrants and patent-holding engineers in Queens, New York, launched 4OVER4.COM as the second web-based printer in the entire United States.

First

The Innovation

4OVER4 was the first printer to introduce full-color printing with 24 to 48 hour turnaround. When the industry said it couldn't be done that fast, they did it anyway. No compromises, no excuses, just engineering.

Today

27 Years and Counting

Over 350 products. More than 6,000 possible combinations. 150,000+ businesses served, from solo freelancers to Google and the United Nations. A facility in Queens that still runs on vegetable inks and waterless presses โ€” built that way from day one because it was the right thing to do.

QR Code Generator: Everything You Need to Know

Is 4OVER4's QR code generator really free?

Yes. Both static and dynamic QR codes are 100% free. Static codes require no account โ€” generate unlimited codes in PNG or SVG at 300+ DPI. Dynamic codes require a free 4OVER4 account so you can manage redirects from your dashboard. No hidden fees, no watermarks, no subscriptions. 4OVER4 built this tool to help customers create print-ready QR codes for the 350+ products in the catalog. The QR generator costs nothing. Printing the materials it goes on is where 4OVER4 makes money. That's the business model. A digital landing page feature is also coming soon โ€” included free with your account.

What resolution are the QR codes?

All QR codes are 300+ DPI, the standard minimum for professional printing. SVG exports are vector-based and scale to any size without quality loss, from a 1-inch square on a business card to a 3-foot square on a banner. PNG exports are high-resolution raster files that work in most design tools.

What size should a QR code be on a business card?

Minimum 0.8 inches (20mm) on a standard 2โ€ x 3.5โ€ business card. 4OVER4 recommends 1 inch by 1 inch for reliable scanning across all phone models. Make sure there's a quiet zone (white space) around the code and strong contrast between the code and background. Print one test card and scan it before ordering a full batch.

Can I customize the QR code color or add a logo?

Yes. The generator supports custom color selection, shape customization (diamonds, dots, stars), individual corner element customization, logo/image upload, social media icon integration, and frame addition. You can see changes in real-time preview before downloading.

What's a vCard QR code?

A vCard QR code holds your contact info: name, phone, email, company, title, and address. When someone scans it, their phone asks if they want to save your contact. Eliminates the โ€œlet me type your email inโ€ moment at networking events. vCard QR codes are one of the most common additions to the back of printed business cards.

What's the difference between static and dynamic QR codes?

Static QR codes store the destination data directly in the QR pattern. They're free, permanent, work offline, and never expire. The downside: once you print them, the destination is locked in. Dynamic QR codes route through a unique 4OVER4-hosted redirect URL. When someone scans, they hit that URL and get forwarded to whatever destination you've set. You can change the destination anytime from your 4OVER4 dashboard โ€” no reprinting needed. 4OVER4 offers both static and dynamic codes for free. Most print companies don't even offer dynamic QR codes, let alone free ones.

What are dynamic QR codes and how do they work on 4OVER4?

When you create a dynamic QR code on 4OVER4, you get a unique 4OVER4-hosted URL baked into the code. When someone scans, their phone hits that URL and gets redirected to your chosen destination. The key part: you can change the destination URL anytime from your 4OVER4 dashboard without reprinting a single thing. Printed 5,000 menus with a QR code pointing to your spring menu? Switch the destination to your summer menu in two clicks. Perfect for seasonal promotions, event schedules, restaurant menus, A/B testing landing pages, or any situation where the content behind the code changes. Dynamic codes are free with a 4OVER4 account.

Do QR codes expire?

Static QR codes never expire. The data is encoded directly in the QR pattern โ€” no server, no subscription, no renewal fee. As long as the destination URL stays live, the code works forever. Dynamic QR codes on 4OVER4 also never expire. Because 4OVER4 hosts the redirect URL on its own infrastructure, there's no third-party dependency and no subscription that can lapse. Other dynamic QR services charge monthly fees and kill your codes if you stop paying. 4OVER4's dynamic codes stay active because the redirect lives on 4OVER4's servers โ€” the same servers that have been running since 1999.

Can I track how many people scan my QR code?

Two options. For static codes, point your QR code to a URL with UTM parameters. Example: yoursite.com/?utm_source=businesscard&utm_medium=qr&utm_campaign=spring2026. Google Analytics picks up every scan with full source attribution. Free, detailed, and you own the data. For dynamic codes, 4OVER4's dashboard has built-in scan tracking: total scan count, location data, device type, and time-of-scan. No third-party analytics subscription needed โ€” it's all in your 4OVER4 account.

What is the digital landing page feature?

Every 4OVER4 user gets a unique URL that serves as a beautiful, mobile-optimized page โ€” think of it as a digital business card or a Linktree-style page. Design it using 4OVER4 templates. Add your contact info, links, portfolio, social profiles, anything you want people to find when they scan your QR code. Print a QR code on your business card that links to your digital landing page, and you have a physical card backed by a living, updatable web presence. The digital landing page can be placed on a custom domain. This feature is coming soon and will be included free with your 4OVER4 account.

Can I save QR codes to my 4OVER4 account?

Yes. Create a free 4OVER4 account and every QR code you generate โ€” static or dynamic โ€” gets saved to your dashboard. Access them anytime, reuse them across different print products, and duplicate them for variations. For dynamic codes, your dashboard is also where you manage redirect destinations. No more digging through your Downloads folder looking for that QR code PNG you made three months ago.

Can I use my own custom domain for the digital landing page?

Yes. Your digital landing page gets a unique URL that can be mapped to your own custom domain. Instead of living on a 4OVER4 subdomain, your digital card shows up at your.domain.com โ€” fully branded, fully yours. Point a QR code at it and anyone who scans sees your custom URL in their browser. This feature is part of the upcoming digital landing page rollout.

What file format should I use for printing?

SVG for professional print workflows. It's vector, scales to any size without pixelation, and works in Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Affinity, and Figma. PNG works for simpler tools like Canva or 4OVER4's Canvs editor. Both formats are 300+ DPI and ready for print. When in doubt, go SVG. 4OVER4's Canvs editor

Can I put a QR code on any 4OVER4 product?

Yes. Business cards, postcards, flyers, stickers, brochures, menus, door hangers, packaging, signs, banners, table tents, all 350+ products accept custom artwork, and a QR code is just part of your design file. Generate the code, drop it into the Canvs editor or your design tool, and upload when you order.

How do I add a QR code to a business card design?

Generate your QR code here (URL type or vCard). Download the PNG or SVG file. Open 4OVER4's free Canvs editor (or Illustrator, Canva, whatever you use). Place the QR code on the back of the card. Resize to at least 0.8 inches. Make sure there's white space around it. Save and order. 4OVER4's team does a free 30-point file check before printing. 4OVER4's free Canvs editor

Is it safe to use a free QR code generator?

4OVER4's generator runs in your browser. The data you enter (URLs, contact info, WiFi passwords) is used to build the QR code image locally. 4OVER4 doesn't store your QR code data or track your generated codes. The tool is free because it connects to 4OVER4's printing business. That's the revenue model, not your data.

Generate. Save. Print. All in One Place.

Static or dynamic QR codes โ€” both free. Save them to your account, change destinations anytime, and print on 350+ products. No other platform gives you the full workflow from QR generation to professional print under one roof.

Legal Disclaimer

QR codes generated by this tool are static and do not expire. 4OVER4 does not store or track your QR code data. Print quality depends on file format, size, and contrast. Minimum recommended print size is 1" x 1" for reliable scanning. Test all QR codes before placing bulk print orders. Free sample kit available to test print quality.
