How to Order Custom Size Posters at Any Dimension

Sofia Ramirez
Sofia Ramirez Design & Templates Editor at 4OVER4.COM

Type the width and height you want, and the price recalculates before anything reaches the cart. What limits you is the product you picked, not the press, and the limits are not where most people assume.

To order a custom size poster, enter your width and height in the size fields on the product page and the configurator prices that exact size. Standard Posters accept a custom size between 11 and 22 inches on the short side and 17 to 28 inches on the long side, with a 50 copy minimum. Matte, Fabric and Canvas Posters reach 59.5 by 100 inches in half inch steps and sell one at a time, Mounted and Foam Core Posters reach 46 by 90.

Quick answer

The size you can order depends on which poster you are standing on

There is no single custom size limit, there are two. Standard Posters are cut from a press sheet, so the custom fields hold you to 11 to 22 inches on the short side and 17 to 28 on the long side, and the order starts at 50 copies. Matte, Fabric, Canvas, Mounted and Foam Core Posters print on a roll, so their size menus step in half inches up to 59.5 by 100 inches and their quantity menus start at one. Pick the product by the size you need, then build the file at that exact size plus 0.125 inch of bleed.

Which custom poster sizes each 4OVER4 poster product will accept A chart plotting the short side of a poster against its long side. A small solid box shows the press window for Standard Posters, 11 to 22 inches on the short side and 17 to 28 inches on the long side. Two larger dashed boxes show the roll printed windows: mounted and foam core posters reach 46 by 90 inches, matte, fabric and canvas posters reach 59.5 by 100 inches. Common sizes are plotted, showing that 24 by 36 falls outside the press window. Where a custom poster size is allowed to land Short side against long side, in inches. Orientation does not matter, the shorter measurement is always checked first. 10 20 30 40 50 60 20 40 60 80 100 short side, inches long side, inches matte, fabric, canvas up to 59.5 x 100 mounted and foam core up to 46 x 90 Standard Posters, press sheet 11 to 22 short side, 17 to 28 long side, 50 copies minimum 11x17 18x24 22x28 24x36 misses the press window 27x40 36x48 48x96, matte only 24 by 36 is the size most people ask for, and it is the first one the press window rejects. Past 22 inches on the short side the job moves to a roll printed stock, where you can order one copy.

Ordering a Custom Size Poster in Five Steps

Standard Posters printed by 4OVER4 stacked on a press table

The size control is the second thing on every poster page, and it behaves differently depending on the stock you landed on. Sort that out first and the rest of the order is ordinary.

  1. Choose the product by how big you need to go. Under 22 inches on the short side you can stay on Standard Posters. Over it, start on Matte Posters, Mounted Posters or Foam Core Posters.
  2. Open the size control and read what it gives you. Standard Posters show two numeric fields that accept tenths of an inch. The roll printed posters show two dropdowns that step in half inches, starting at 8 by 8.
  3. Enter width, then height, and let the price settle. The price recalculates as soon as a valid pair is committed. If the numbers snap back, the size was outside the range and the message will tell you which combination failed.
  4. Pick the quantity. Standard Posters start at 50 and step 100, 200, 300, up to 25,000. The roll printed posters start at 1 and run to 100, which is the whole reason a one off 30 by 40 print is possible.
  5. Set stock, lamination, turnaround and proof, then upload. Choose Free Online Proof if the size is unusual. It costs nothing and it is the last cheap chance to catch a file built at the wrong dimensions.

If you are still deciding between sizes rather than ordering one, the poster sizes in inches guide lists the standard dimensions and what each one is normally used for.

How Big You Can Actually Go, Product by Product

Mounted posters printed by 4OVER4 on rigid foam core board

Every poster product carries its own size window, and the windows are not close to each other. This is the table worth checking before you build the file.

ProductHow you set the sizeSize rangeMinimum orderStarts at
Standard PostersTyped fields, tenths of an inch11 to 22 short side, 17 to 28 long side50$108.75
Matte PostersHalf inch dropdowns8 to 59.5 by 8 to 100 inches1$25.00
Fabric PostersHalf inch dropdowns8 to 59.5 by 8 to 100 inches1$25.00
Canvas PostersHalf inch dropdowns8 to 59.5 by 8 to 100 inches1$25.00
Mounted PostersHalf inch dropdowns8 to 46 by 8 to 90 inches1$39.99
Foam Core PostersHalf inch dropdowns8 to 46 by 8 to 90 inches1$49.99
Framed PostersFixed size only16 by 24 inches1$87.86

Two things in that table catch people out. The first is orientation. The bounds are not width and height in the way you drew the artboard, they are short side and long side, so the configurator sorts your two numbers before it tests them. A 28 by 11 poster passes on Standard Posters. A 28 by 24 does not, because 24 is over the 22 inch short side limit.

The second is what happens when a size is out of range. Nothing rounds. The fields revert to the last size that worked and a message names the failed combination, which is deliberate: a poster trimmed to a size the press cannot hold is scrap, and scrap is worse than a rejected form. If the size you want lives past 46 inches on both sides, you have left poster territory and want large format printing.

What a Custom Size Costs, and Where the Minimum Bites

Matte posters printed by 4OVER4 on 10mil semi gloss stock

On the roll printed posters, price is area times a material rate, with a floor under it. Each stock carries its own rate per square inch, and each product carries a minimum charge that applies until the area is big enough to overtake it.

StockRate per square inchProduct minimumArea where the rate passes the minimum
10mil Semi Gloss$0.0404$25.00 on Matte and FabricAbout 620 sq in, near 24 by 26
10mil Hi Gloss$0.0439$25.00About 570 sq in, near 22 by 26
Semi Gloss or Gloss Canvas$0.0646$25.00 on Canvas PostersAbout 390 sq in, near 18 by 21
White adhesive vinyl, removable$0.0734$25.00About 340 sq in, near 17 by 20

10.4 mil Semi Gloss on foam core$0.0880$49.99 on Foam Core PostersAbout 570 sq in, near 22 by 26

Work one through. A 24 by 36 poster is 864 square inches. On 10mil Semi Gloss at $0.0404 that is roughly $34.91 before lamination, turnaround or proof options, which is why a big single poster costs less than most people expect. Go the other way and the floor takes over: an 11 by 17 print is 187 square inches, nowhere near the $25 minimum, so it costs the same as a 24 by 26.

Mounted Posters and Foam Core Posters use the same three stocks and the same $0.0880 rate, and differ mainly in their minimum charge. For anything under roughly 455 square inches, Mounted Posters is the cheaper way to get a print on 3/16 inch foam core.

Lamination is charged as a percentage, not a flat fee: single sided gloss or matte lamination adds 75 percent, double sided adds 125 percent. On a large poster that is real money, so laminate the pieces that get handled and leave the wall pieces bare. Rush works the same way. Matte Posters ship in 2 business days as standard, 1 business day adds 25 percent, and same day adds 100 percent. Standard Posters run 5 business days, with 4 days at 5 percent, 3 days at 10 percent, 2 days at 25 percent, 1 day at 50 percent, and same day at 100 percent. Ordering three days early is the cheapest discount on the page. The where to print posters guide covers how those timings compare with a walk in shop.

Setting Up a File for a Size Nobody Stocks

Foam core posters printed by 4OVER4 with a rigid mounted edge

A custom size has no template waiting for it, so the document is yours to build correctly. Four numbers cover almost every job.

  • Document size equals the ordered size. Not the paper size, not the nearest standard. If you ordered 30 by 42, the artboard is 30 by 42.
  • Bleed is 0.125 inch on all four sides. Any background that touches an edge runs past the trim by that much, so a shifted blade never exposes white paper. The bleed and trim guide shows what it looks like in the file.
  • Safety is another 0.125 inch inward. Text, logos and QR codes stay inside that line. On a 40 inch poster the trim can wander further than on a business card, and a headline sitting on the edge is the first casualty.
  • Resolution follows viewing distance. 300 dpi at final size on Standard Posters, 100 to 150 dpi at final size on anything roll printed. A 48 by 96 inch file at 300 dpi is 14,400 by 28,800 pixels, which serves no one, since nobody reads a 4 by 8 foot poster from 12 inches away.

Supply CMYK and convert type to outlines. One product specific trap is worth naming: on Canvas Posters, the border option adds 2 inches outside the size you entered rather than taking it out of the image, so a 24 by 36 canvas with a border finishes at 28 by 40 on the wall. Choose Cut to Size if the wall space is fixed.

If your size is close to a standard one, check the blank template library first, since a ready made file with the bleed and safety already drawn is faster than building one. And when the poster comes back, the guide to putting a poster on a wall covers getting an oversized print up without buckling it.

Wally sizes your poster

Short side first, then pick the stock that will hold it

Wally, the 4OVER4 mascot with a 4, holding a tape measure across a poster while the size fields on screen show a custom width and height

Wally measures the wall, not the paper. He writes down the two numbers, sorts them so the smaller one goes first, and checks the short side against the product limit. Under 22 inches he stays on Standard Posters and orders 50. Over 22 he moves to matte or foam core, where the menu steps in half inches and he can order a single print. Then he builds the file at that exact size with an eighth of an inch of bleed all the way around, because a poster trimmed to the wrong size is a poster nobody hangs.

Common Questions

Your custom size questions, answered

Can I order a 24 by 36 inch poster?

Yes, but not on Standard Posters. That product accepts a custom size up to 22 inches on the short side, and 24 is over the line, so the field rejects it. Order 24 by 36 on Matte Posters, Fabric Posters or Canvas Posters, which run on a roll and reach 59.5 by 100 inches, or on Mounted Posters and Foam Core Posters if you want it stiffened on 3/16 inch foam core. All five sell in quantities from one.

What is the largest custom poster you print?

Matte Posters, Fabric Posters and Canvas Posters go to 59.5 inches by 100 inches in half inch steps. Mounted Posters and Foam Core Posters stop at 46 by 90 inches, because a mounted board that size is already awkward to ship without a corner crush. Past those numbers the job stops being a poster: a 10 foot graphic belongs on a vinyl banner, where the width menu runs to 150 feet.

Can I order just one custom size poster?

On Matte, Fabric, Canvas, Mounted and Foam Core Posters, yes. Their quantity menus start at 1 and run to 100, so a single 30 by 40 print is a normal order. Standard Posters are a press product and start at 50 copies, stepping to 100, 200, 500 and up to 25,000, which is why the entry price is $108.75 against $25.

Does a custom size cost more than a standard size?

Not by itself. On the roll printed posters the price is the material rate times the area, so a custom 22 by 34 costs what any other 748 square inches costs on that stock. What you feel is the minimum charge: $25 on Matte, Fabric and Canvas, $39.99 on Mounted, $49.99 on Foam Core. Below roughly 620 square inches on 10mil Semi Gloss you pay the minimum no matter how small you go, so shrinking a poster past that point saves nothing.

Why did my size get rejected and jump back to the old numbers?

The size fell outside the product bounds, so the configurator restored your last valid size rather than quietly rounding it to the nearest legal one. The message names the exact size that failed. The usual cause is orientation: the shorter side is checked against the width limit and the longer side against the height limit, so a 28 by 11 poster passes on Standard Posters and a 28 by 24 does not.

How do I set up a file for a poster size that has no template?

Build the document at the exact size you ordered, add 0.125 inch of bleed on all four sides, and keep type and logos 0.125 inch inside the trim. Supply CMYK. Aim for 300 dpi at final size on Standard Posters and 100 to 150 dpi at final size on anything roll printed, because a 48 by 96 inch file at 300 dpi is 14,400 by 28,800 pixels and no one on either end wants to open it.
