How Bulk Poster Printing Drops Your Per Poster Price

Marcus Chen
Marcus Chen Senior Content Strategist at 4OVER4.COM

Standard Posters price in sets of 50 and keep dropping to 25,000. Large Format prices by the square inch and ignores quantity entirely. Which one your artwork lands on decides what a bulk order can save.

Bulk poster printing lowers the unit price because the fixed part of the job, the file check, the imposition and the press makeready, gets spread across more sheets. Standard Posters start at $108.75 for a set of 50 and the quantity tiers climb to 25,000, with most of the per poster drop happening in the first few steps. The catch is that only tiered products behave this way. Large Format Posters are priced by the finished square inch, so 40 copies cost 40 times one copy, and there the levers are size and material rather than quantity.

Quick answer

Setup divided by sheets, and only where tiers exist

A bulk discount is one fixed cost spread thinner, nothing more. Preflight, imposition and makeready are paid once; paper, ink and press time are paid per sheet. Standard Posters sell in sets of 50 with tiers running to 25,000, so the unit price falls steeply at first and then settles onto the paper and ink floor. Large Format Posters carry no tiers at all, because they are quoted by the finished square inch. Keeping a design at 22" x 28" or under is therefore worth more than any negotiation, and rush turnaround can cost more than the tier it is racing to deliver.

Where a bulk poster discount comes from, and where it does not exist A cost per poster chart. The teal curve for tiered Standard Posters falls steeply from the 50 piece minimum toward a dashed floor of paper, ink and press time as the run climbs to 25,000. The orange line for Large Format Posters stays flat because that product is priced by the finished square inch, so ordering more copies never lowers the unit price. Standard Posters run 11x17 to 22x28 in sets of 50. Anything wider moves to Large Format, where price follows area and quantity is neutral.

What Actually Falls When You Order More Posters

Standard posters printed by 4OVER4 stacked in a full colour run

A print job has two kinds of cost, and only one of them cares how many posters you ordered.

The fixed part is paid once no matter the quantity: preflighting the file, imposing it on the sheet, setting the press, and running makeready sheets until the colour is right. The variable part scales one for one with the run: paper, ink, press time, trimming, packing. Your unit price is the fixed part divided by the quantity, plus the variable part. That is the whole of a bulk discount, and it explains its shape.

Divide a fixed cost by 50 and it lands heavily on every sheet. Divide the same cost by 500 and it has almost vanished. Divide it by 5,000 and the difference from 500 is small, because by then you are paying for paper and ink and nothing else. This is why the biggest saving per poster sits in the first few steps up, and why the jump from a large run to an enormous one looks disappointing on the unit price. The same arithmetic runs under every product we print, and the guide to how bulk price breaks work walks through it across the catalog.

Standard Posters start at $108.75 for a set of 50 and the tiers keep going to 25,000, so you can watch the curve flatten in the configurator by pricing two quantities back to back before you commit to either.

Tiered Pricing and Square Inch Pricing Are Different Animals

Before you ask how many posters to order, find out whether your poster is even sold by quantity. Two of the four poster products here are, and two are not.

ProductHow it pricesSize rangeStandard turnaroundStarting price

Mounted PostersPer board8" x 10" to 40" x 60"4 business days$39.99
Foam CorePer board16" x 20" to 40" x 60"4 business days$49.99

Read the second column and the rest of the order plans itself. On Large Format Posters the total tracks the surface you are covering, so a 24" x 36" costs what a 24" x 36" costs whether you buy one or forty. Ordering more never earns a break there. Your levers are the finished size, the material, and whether you add lamination.

So for a retail rollout across 40 windows, the single most valuable decision happens in the layout, not at checkout. A design that fits 22" x 28" stays on the tiered product and rides the quantity curve down. The same design at 24" x 36" is 40 individual large format prints. If the artwork genuinely needs the extra height, the large format poster size guide covers what each oversized format is used for, and large format printing lists the materials it runs on.

Picking Stock and Sides Before You Commit the Run

Poster stock options printed by 4OVER4 in gloss and matte finishes

Stock is the second biggest number on a bulk order and the one people decide fastest. Standard Posters carry nine of them, and they are not interchangeable.

  • 70# uncoated text. The cheapest sheet in the list. Takes tape and marker, reads soft rather than punchy, and shows a little of the other side if you print both.
  • 100# gloss text, 100# silk or matte text. The everyday retail poster. Enough body to hang without waving, and the silk or matte version is the safer pick for anything behind glass.
  • 80# gloss cover, 100# silk or matte cover. Heavier. Stands on an easel and stays flat on a foam strip without curling at the corners.
  • 14pt gloss cover, 14pt uncoated cover. Card weight. This is where a poster starts behaving like a sign.
  • 8mil and 15pt synthetic plastic. Waterproof. For washdown areas, outdoor use and anywhere a paper sheet would go soft.

The trade-off nobody mentions in a quote is glare. Gloss looks rich under retail spotlights and turns into a mirror in a street-facing window on a bright afternoon, which is exactly where most bulk poster runs end up. Silk and matte hold their contrast at an angle. The High-Gloss UV Coating option is worth it for posters that ship rolled and get handled by store staff, because it resists scuffing, and it is a mistake on anything you plan to write on, since marker will not take.

Printing both sides only pays when the poster hangs in open air and gets seen from behind. On a wall it doubles the ink and changes nothing. Before you commit 500 sheets to a stock you have never handled, order free paper samples and look at them in the light the poster will actually live in. The full lineup sits on posters printing if you want to compare weights side by side.

Versions, Overs, and the Two Ways a Bulk Order Gets Expensive

Two things quietly undo a bulk saving, and both are decided before anyone opens the configurator.

Versioning. A quantity tier belongs to one artwork. Twelve locations with twelve addresses on the poster means twelve runs, each paying its own setup and each starting at its own set of 50. You ordered 600 posters and paid the 50 price twelve times. The fix is to split the message: one common poster printed at the volume tier, and the local detail carried by something small. A mounted poster at the counter from $39.99, or a foam core board from $49.99, does that job per site without dragging the main run down to a short one.

Overs. A reprint pays setup a second time, and on Standard Posters it also buys a whole set of 50 to replace the twelve that got torn, water damaged or sun bleached in a window. Posters go missing at a predictable rate: tape pulls corners, tubes get crushed, and one store always loses theirs. Add that margin into the first run where it costs paper and ink instead of a fresh setup.

The other side of the same coin is dated artwork. A poster with a sale date, a season, or a price on it is only cheap at 5,000 if the date is still true when you hang the last one. Print the undated version deep and the dated version shallow. That single split is usually worth more than any tier.

Ordering a Bulk Poster Run Without Surprises

Full colour posters printed by 4OVER4 ready for a retail rollout

Six decisions, in the order that saves the most money when you get them right.

  1. Lock the finished size first. It decides whether you are on a tiered product at all. Staying at or under 22" x 28" keeps you on the quantity curve.
  2. Start from a template. Correct trim, correct bleed, no resizing later. The blank template library has the poster sizes ready to open, and the guide to poster templates that print sharp covers image resolution at poster scale.
  3. Choose stock and sides. Glare, weight and whether anyone needs to write on it. Samples before volume.
  4. Price two adjacent quantities. Compare the per poster figure, not the total. If the next tier down the curve barely moves it, take the smaller one.
  5. Add the spare margin into the run. Cheaper now as paper than later as a whole new setup.
  6. Pick turnaround against the hang date. Five business days is standard. Rush is real and it is priced on top, so build the calendar backwards from the wall.

If the design has already outgrown 22" x 28" by the time you get to step one, jump to how to print large posters, which deals with material and viewing distance rather than quantity tiers.

Wally explains the bulk poster break

One setup, more sheets, a smaller number on each one

Wally, the 4OVER4 mascot with a 4, splitting one press setup cost across a growing stack of printed posters

Wally pays for the file check and the press setup once, then keeps feeding sheets. At 50 posters that setup sits heavily on every sheet. At 500 it has almost disappeared, and at 5,000 he is really just buying paper and ink. That is the whole discount. It only works on Standard Posters, which sell in sets of 50 with tiers to 25,000. Hand Wally a 24 by 36 and he switches to the square inch price list, where ordering more copies changes nothing per copy.

Common Questions

Your bulk poster questions, answered

What is the minimum order for bulk poster printing?

Standard Posters sell in sets of 50, starting at $108.75 for the first set, and the quantity tiers run all the way to 25,000. If you need fewer than 50, the tiered product is the wrong door: Large Format Posters are priced by the finished square inch from $25, and Mounted Posters are priced per board from $39.99, so a run of six is perfectly normal on either one. You just do not get a quantity discount there.

How many posters do I have to order before the price break is worth it?

Price two adjacent quantities in the configurator and compare the per poster number, because most of the fall happens early. The fixed part of the job, file check, imposition and makeready, is spread thinner with every sheet, and by the time you are a few hundred deep it is nearly gone. Past that point you are paying for paper, ink and press time, which do not get cheaper. The right quantity is the one you will hang, plus a spare margin, not the one with the lowest unit price on the screen.

Do oversized posters get cheaper in bulk too?

No, and this is the part that catches most rollouts. Large Format Posters are quoted by the finished square inch, so 40 copies cost 40 times what one copy costs. Standard Posters top out at 22" x 28". If your design can live at 22" x 28" or smaller, keeping it there is worth more than any other decision on the order, because it is the only way quantity moves the unit price.

Which stock should I pick for a big run going into store windows?

A silk or matte finish, in either the 100# text or the 100# cover, because gloss throws a hard reflection when the sun hits a window and the message disappears from the sidewalk. If the poster faces weather, gets wiped down, or lives in a back of house area with moisture, the 8mil or 15pt synthetic plastic stock is the one that survives. Order free paper samples before you commit 500 sheets to a stock you have never touched.

Can I split one bulk run across several designs?

Not on one run. A quantity tier applies to a single artwork, so twelve store versions of 50 are priced as twelve separate sets of 50. The way around it is to design one poster that carries everything shared, print that at the volume you want, then handle the local line with a small mounted board or a sticker at the counter. It is usually cheaper than twelve short runs and it keeps the brand consistent.

How fast can a bulk poster run ship?

Standard Posters run 5 business days as standard, with 4-day, 3-day, 2-day, Next-Day and Same-Day rush available. Large Format Posters are quicker at 2 business days standard, with Next-Day and Same-Day rush. Rush is priced on top of the run, so on a large order it can easily cost more than the tier you climbed to save money. Book against the date the posters have to be on the wall, not the date you place the order.
