How to Order Custom Paper Tape Without Guessing the Spec

Tobias Reed
Tobias Reed Production Knowledge Lead at 4OVER4.COM

Four numbers, one adhesive decision and an artwork rule nobody tells you. Here is the order sheet for branded carton tape, with the case arithmetic that turns a case price into cents per box.

To order custom paper tape you specify five things: adhesive type (water activated gummed kraft or pressure sensitive), width (2 or 3 inches), roll length (55 or 110 yards), ink colors, and how many cases. At 4OVER4.COM the printed tape is white or clear pressure sensitive polypropylene from $347.11 a case, 36 rolls per case in 2 inch and 24 in 3 inch, on a 20 business day made to order run. Clear film over a brown carton gives the kraft look; genuine gummed kraft comes from a gummed tape supplier, and we print the box, the labels and the tags around it.

Quick answer

Adhesive first, then width, then the case arithmetic

Custom tape is ordered by adhesive, width, roll length, ink and case count, in that order. Water activated gummed kraft bonds into the corrugated fiber and needs a wetting dispenser; pressure sensitive tape, paper or film, runs off any hand gun. Two inch tape is the standard seal at 36 rolls a case, three inch covers the flap creases at 24 rolls a case. Convert the roll length into boxes before you compare quotes, because a case price means nothing until you know how many cartons it closes.

Tape width against the carton seam: 2 inch versus 3 inch Two carton tops seen from above. The left carton is sealed with a 2 inch strip that covers the centre seam and wraps 1 inch over each end, packed 36 rolls to a case. The right carton is sealed with a 3 inch strip that covers the seam plus the flap crease on both sides, packed 24 rolls to a case. Below, the arithmetic that turns roll length into boxes sealed. Width is a spec you pick twice: once for strength, once for the brand stripe flap seam 2 in The everyday carton seal 55 or 110 yd rolls, 36 rolls per case Covers the seam, wraps about 1 in each end flap crease 3 in Heavy boxes and a wider stripe 55 or 110 yd rolls, 24 rolls per case Bridges the seam plus both flap creases 55 yd roll = 1,980 in 12 in seam + 2 in wrap each end = 16 in per box about 120 boxes a roll Run the same arithmetic on your own box before you order: roll length and case count, not the sticker price, decide the cost per sealed carton.

Paper Tape or Film Tape, and What Each One Costs You

Custom printed packaging tape from 4OVER4 sealing a corrugated carton along the centre seam

Three tapes get called custom paper tape, and they behave nothing alike on a packing bench. Sort this out first, because it decides your dispenser, your packing speed and whether the eco line on your box survives a customer looking closely.

TapeHow it sticksWhat it needsWhere it lets you down
Gummed kraft, water activatedStarch adhesive wets and bonds into the corrugated fiber, so the seal becomes part of the box.A wetting dispenser and a bench to mount it on.Useless on plastic totes, poly coated cartons and dusty recycled board. One strip, applied once, no repositioning.
Self adhesive kraftPressure sensitive adhesive on a paper backing. Surface bond, tears by hand.An ordinary hand dispenser, nothing else. The bond sits on the surface, so it peels off cleanly, which also means it hides tampering rather than showing it.
Printed polypropylenePressure sensitive adhesive on clear or white film. The same tape most warehouses already run.Any hand gun or tape machine.Loses grip on cold cartons straight out of an unheated bay, and it never goes into the pulp with the fiber.

Read the last column before the first. Gummed kraft is the honest choice when the packaging itself is the sustainability argument, and how gummed paper tape actually bonds covers why the seal tears the box face when someone opens it. Self adhesive kraft looks like the compromise and mostly is one: paper on top, plastic behaviour underneath, at a higher price than film.

What 4OVER4.COM prints is the third row. Custom packaging tape runs on white or clear pressure sensitive polypropylene, from $347.11 a case, in the ink colors you specify. Clear film over a brown corrugated box reads as kraft to anyone glancing at the parcel, and it holds ink far more crisply than a rough paper backing does. If you need the fiber based version, buy the gummed tape from a gummed tape house and print the rest of the parcel here. Our kraft tape guide lays out that split in more detail.

The Spec Sheet: Width, Roll Length and Rolls Per Case

Rolls of custom printed packaging tape from 4OVER4 in 2 inch and 3 inch widths

Every tape order comes down to four numbers, and a supplier who cannot answer all four is guessing. Width, roll length, rolls per case, and how many cases.

Width. Two inches is the standard carton seal and covers the centre seam with about an inch of overlap on each side. Three inches bridges the seam plus both flap creases, which matters on a wide box where a narrow strip leaves the creases free to lift, and it gives your artwork half again as much stripe. The catch is packing density: at 4OVER4.COM the 2 inch rolls pack 36 to a case while the 3 inch rolls pack 24, so the wider tape seals fewer boxes for your money.

Roll length. A 55 yard roll suits short runs and small cartons. A 110 yard roll means half as many roll changes on a line that packs all day, which sounds trivial until you count the seconds against a shift.

Boxes per roll. Run the arithmetic on your own carton instead of taking a supplier's estimate. A 55 yard roll is 1,980 inches. A 12 inch seam with a 2 inch wrap at each end uses about 16 inches, which is roughly 120 boxes a roll and about 4,300 boxes a case. Add a second strip across the flaps for a heavy box and that number halves immediately.

  • 2 in x 55 yd, 36 rolls per case. The default, and the right answer for most ecommerce cartons.
  • 2 in x 110 yd, 36 rolls per case. Same width, fewer changeovers, for a busy packing station.
  • 3 in x 55 yd, 24 rolls per case. Heavier boxes and a wider brand stripe.
  • 3 in x 110 yd, 24 rolls per case. High volume packing on large cartons.

Set the width against the box you actually ship. If you are still choosing that box, cube boxes start at $213.09 and the shipping packaging guide works through box, void fill and seal as one decision rather than three.

Artwork That Survives Being Wound, Printed and Cut at Random

Printed packaging tape from 4OVER4 showing branded artwork repeating along the roll

Tape is the least forgiving surface we print on, and almost every disappointing tape job traces back to art that was designed as though it were a business card.

Design for a random cut. Your artwork repeats along the roll, and the packer cuts wherever the box ends. A single centred lockup gets sliced through the middle on most parcels. A repeating pattern, a logo with the name set to run continuously, or a mark with breathing room on both sides reads correctly no matter where the blade lands.

Ink is flat and there is no white. You pick one ink color, with an optional second from a wide palette. There is no white underprint, so a pale ink on clear film vanishes against a brown carton and a pale ink on kraft goes muddy. When you want light artwork, reverse it out of a solid block: the block prints in your color, your mark stays unprinted, and the film or the box underneath becomes the light element.

Keep type off the edge. Tape wanders slightly as it winds, so a line of small text pushed to the very edge of the web will sit differently from roll to roll. Pull anything you care about a comfortable margin in from both edges.

Build the file the way you would for any press job: vector art, fonts converted to outlines, spot colors named rather than approximated in RGB. Our packaging file preparation guide covers the handoff, and the blank template library gives you correctly sized layouts for the printed pieces that go inside the box. Take the free online proof rather than sending straight to production. On a 36 roll case, a proof is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy.

Lead Time, Case Minimums and the Real Cost Per Sealed Box

Roll packaging labels printed by 4OVER4 as a faster alternative to custom printed tape

Custom tape is made to order, so two things surprise first time buyers: the calendar and the minimum. Standard production at 4OVER4.COM is 20 business days, and the proof approval sits inside that window, which means tape ordered for a launch needs to be ordered a month before the launch, not a week.

The minimum is a full case. One case of printed packaging tape is $347.11 and holds 36 rolls of 2 inch tape. Against the arithmetic above, that is around 4,300 sealed cartons, or roughly 8 cents a box. Order 10 cases at $2,332.75 and the same seal costs closer to 5 cents. At 50 cases the per case price falls to about $162.16, which is less than half the single case rate, and bulk discount pricing does the tiering for you.

That per box number is the one worth arguing over. Tape only makes sense when you ship enough boxes to work through a case in a reasonable time, because printed tape sitting in a stockroom for two years is dead money with an adhesive that is quietly aging.

When the volume is not there yet, or the deadline is, branded labels do the same job on a shorter cycle. Roll packaging labels start at $322.98 and apply to a plain sealed box, while premium packaging labels start at $29.16 for a sheet quantity that suits a small run. Both let you brand a parcel this week rather than next month, and the labels printing range shows the material and shape options side by side.

The Recycling Claim, and What Holds Up Under Scrutiny

Kraft hang tags printed by 4OVER4 on uncoated brown board

Here is the part most tape pages skip. Plastic tape on a corrugated box does not stop the box being recycled: mills pulp the board and screen the film out, which is why kerbside programs accept taped cartons. What plastic tape cannot do is go through with the fiber the way a starch based gummed kraft tape does.

So the honest test is what your packaging claims. If the box says nothing about materials, printed polypropylene tape is a sensible, cheap, durable seal and nobody will think twice. If the box carries a printed promise about being paper based or plastic free, the tape has to match it, and a customer photographing a plastic seam under an eco claim is a worse outcome than never making the claim.

There is a middle route that works well. Order clear film tape so the kraft carton shows through, keep the printed sustainability language off the tape itself, and put the material story on pieces that genuinely are uncoated paper: kraft hang tags from $57.96, an uncoated insert card, a plain corrugated box with no laminate. The pack then looks and feels like paper packaging, and every claim printed on it is true. What sustainable printing actually means goes through which of these choices move the needle and which are decoration.

One practical note if you go fully paper: gummed kraft is applied wet and cannot be repositioned, and it will not stick to a poly coated or waxed carton at all. Check the box surface before you order the tape, not after the pallet arrives.

Wally explains the tape order

Five specs, and one of them is arithmetic

Wally, the 4OVER4 mascot with a 4, measuring a 2 inch and a 3 inch printed tape strip against a corrugated box seam while counting rolls in a case

Wally starts at the adhesive: gummed kraft needs a water dispenser and bonds into the box, pressure sensitive tape runs off the gun already on your bench. Then width, because 2 inch covers the seam and 3 inch covers the flap creases as well. Then roll length, then ink. Last he does the sum everyone skips: a 55 yard roll is 1,980 inches, an average carton eats about 16 of them, so a 36 roll case closes somewhere near 4,300 boxes. That is how a case price becomes cents per parcel.

Common Questions

Your custom tape questions, answered

Can I order kraft paper tape printed with my logo from 4OVER4.COM?

Not kraft. The printed tape we run is pressure sensitive polypropylene in white or clear, priced from $347.11 a case, and the clear film over a brown corrugated box gives you most of the kraft look without the paper backing. If your brief specifically calls for water activated gummed kraft, buy that from a gummed tape supplier and let us print the parts of the parcel that carry the detail: the box, the packaging labels and the hang tags. Ink on tape is one or two flat colors, so anything with fine artwork usually belongs on a label anyway.

Gummed kraft or self adhesive tape for ecommerce orders?

If you pack in one place with a bench and a volume worth the dispenser, gummed kraft wins: it wets, bonds into the corrugated fiber, seals a box in a single strip, and it cannot be peeled and reclosed without leaving a torn face. If packing happens on a shelf, in a back room, or wherever the order came in, self adhesive tape off a hand gun wins because there is no water tank, no warm up and nothing to maintain. Speed and location decide this, not the material.

Should I order 2 inch or 3 inch tape?

Order 2 inch for cartons up to about 12 by 12 by 12 inches and anything a courier will handle normally. Order 3 inch when the box is heavy, when the flaps are wide enough that a narrow strip leaves the creases uncovered, or when the tape is doing real branding work and you want the wider stripe. The trade off is case count: 2 inch rolls pack 36 to a case, 3 inch rolls pack 24, so the wider tape costs more per box sealed even at the same case price.

How many boxes does one case of tape seal?

Do the arithmetic on your own carton rather than trusting a round number. A 55 yard roll is 1,980 inches. A 12 inch seam with a 2 inch wrap over each end uses about 16 inches, so roughly 120 boxes per roll and about 4,300 boxes from a 36 roll case. That puts a $347.11 case at roughly 8 cents a sealed carton, and a 10 case order at $2,332.75 brings it closer to 5 cents. Longer cartons or a second reinforcing strip cut those counts fast.

Can I print white ink on brown or clear tape?

Plan on dark ink instead. Tape prints in flat spot colors with no white underprint, so a light ink on clear film disappears against a brown box and a light ink on kraft goes muddy. The reliable fix is to reverse your mark out of a solid block of color: the block prints, your logo stays unprinted, and the film or the carton underneath becomes the light part of the design.

How long does custom printed tape take, and can it be rushed?

Standard production is 20 business days at 4OVER4.COM because printed tape is made to order and wound to your spec, and the free online proof step sits inside that window. It is not a next day product, so order the tape ahead of the campaign it is meant to support. When a launch date is already tight, print packaging labels instead: they run on a far shorter cycle and stick to plain tape or a plain box just as well.

Does printed tape hurt the recyclability of the box?

A small amount of plastic tape on a corrugated box is normal and mills screen it out during pulping, so the box still recycles. What plastic tape cannot do is go into the pulp with the fiber, which is what a paper based gummed tape does. If your packaging carries a printed claim about being fully paper based, the tape has to match the claim or somebody will photograph the mismatch.
