What is the difference between a real watermark and a printed one?

A real watermark is a thickness variation in the sheet itself, made by a dandy roll pressing the fibers while the paper forms, so it shows as light and dark when held up to a window and cannot be printed on afterward. A simulated watermark is a translucent varnish or resin printed on the back of the sheet, usually visible at an angle or against light. Which documents legally require security features?
