Scrim vinyl is a polyester mesh sandwiched between two vinyl faces, and the scrim is what stops a small nick from running into a tear. Blockout grades at 15 to 18 oz add an opaque core so a double sided banner does not ghost the back image through the front. The Edge Is Where Cheap Banners Fail
Almost no banner fails in the middle. It fails at a grommet, at a corner, or along a raw edge that was never hemmed, and all three are finishing decisions the printer made before the banner shipped.
A hem is the material folded back on itself and welded, usually about an inch, which doubles the thickness exactly where the hardware pulls. Grommets go into that doubled edge at roughly 24 inch intervals with one in every corner. Punch a grommet through a single unhemmed layer and it will pull out, usually in the first week the wind gets under the banner. Wind is the other decision. Slitting a finished vinyl banner is a common suggestion and a bad one: a cut in tensioned vinyl gives a tear a starting point, and the pressure it relieves is not worth what it invites. Perforated mesh banners let air through the whole face instead, which is why fence wraps and scaffold banners are almost always mesh. If the artwork has to stay dense and saturated, keep the vinyl and switch the hanging method: pole pockets top and bottom spread the load along the whole edge instead of concentrating it at five points.
One more thing to ask about on big jobs. Banner vinyl comes off rolls in fixed widths, so a finished drop taller than the roll needs a welded seam. Proofs, Files, and Why 300 DPI Is the Wrong Target
The second thing that separates banner printers is what happens to your file between upload and press. Ask two questions: do I see a proof, and what do you do if the file is wrong.
A soft proof is a PDF or an on screen preview showing the trimmed banner with the hem allowance marked. It catches the things that actually go wrong at this size: text sitting inside the hem fold, a logo centered on the artboard but off center on the finished drop, a pole pocket eating three inches of the design. A hard copy proof, printed on the real material and shipped to you, is the only way to judge color on a large flat solid, and it costs a shipping cycle. Resolution is where most people overspend effort. A banner is read from several feet back, so 100 to 150 dpi at the finished size is enough, and working at one tenth scale at 1000 to 1500 dpi produces the same output in a file that opens. What does matter is color space. Send RGB and a large flat area will convert somewhere you did not choose. Supply brand colors as CMYK or Pantone values and let the printer tell you which ones sit outside the achievable range on vinyl. Production Days and Transit Days Are Two Different Numbers
Banners get ordered late. That is the nature of the product, and it is why turnaround is the spec people misread most often when they choose a printer.
Production turnaround counts only the time the banner is being printed, hemmed, grommeted and boxed. Shipping starts when it leaves the dock.
