How to Install an Aluminum Wall Graphic
One person can do a small graphic. Anything wider than your arm span is a two person job. Budget more time for the measuring than for the sticking.
- Clean the wall and let it dry. Mild soap and water, then a wipe with isopropyl alcohol on anything greasy, then leave it. Dust and hand oil are what defeat a pressure sensitive adhesive, and a wall that feels dry can still be damp in the paint. Fresh paint needs to cure for a few weeks before anything gets stuck to it.
- Dry fit and hinge. Hold the graphic up with the backing still on, level it, and tape across the top with painter's tape. That tape line is your hinge. Step back and check it against the ceiling line and the nearest door frame, because a graphic level to a spirit level and crooked to the room will look crooked forever.
- Peel and squeegee from the center out. Flip the graphic up on its hinge, peel the backing away a hand's width at a time, and lay it down from the middle outward with a felt edged squeegee in overlapping strokes. Working outward pushes air to the edges instead of trapping it in the middle. Never drop a whole sheet onto a wall at once.
- Seal the corners and edges. Go back around the perimeter and press every edge and corner firmly. Edges are where a graphic starts to lift, and a corner that has not been pressed will find a shoulder or a vacuum cleaner within a month.
- Removing it later. Warm the film with a hair dryer and pull it back slowly against itself at a low angle rather than straight out from the wall. Low and slow is what leaves the paint behind. On sound, fully cured paint that comes away clean; on a wall painted last week, expect to touch up.
